About
Origins
Arts-A-Budding was started in 1975 by Sandy Haspel. She brought the idea for this county wide exhibit from her former home in Quincy, Illinois. She states she began this show as an opportunity for children to display their art to family and community. As a board member of the Porter County Art Commission she initiated the Arts-A-Budding exhibit in Porter County. The event was well received and became an annual event.
Many people participated in making this exhibit one that Porter County can be proud of. Service clubs such as Kiwanis, Tri Kappa, and the Women’s club of Valparaiso give financial support along with individual patrons. Assistance is provided by the Brauer Museum of art under the direction of Greg Herzlib and Gloria Ruff. Valparaiso University has provided the Chapel of the Resurrection as the beautiful site for our annual exhibit, which has attracted many people from the community to visit the University Campus.
Participation
Through the years the show has developed into an exceptionally unique community event. Public and private schools of Porter County are extended an invitation to participate in the show. Each art teacher in Porter County is asked to select only 11 pieces of artwork out of all the students they teach. Awards have changed through the years, having come to the present philosophy that all participating students are winners by virtue of having been selected by their visual arts teacher as one of eleven students to represent the best art from their schools art program. Many teachers see over 400 students so to be selected is a true honor.
Today as the show continues, the Porter County Arts Commission, the John W. Anderson Foundation, the Noon Kiwanis club of Valparaiso, and the freewill offering taken during last year’s event provide the primary funding for its existence. The Brauer Museum of art, the chapel of the resurrection, and substantial local support are credited for furthering the Arts and encouraging the talents of young people in our community through this event.
